I read with growing meh* that MP’s have voted to continue spending our money without any real accountability; which upsets me somewhat. It’s as though they’ve abandoned all pretence of respectability and opted for the old adage ‘don’t do as I do, do as I say.’
Still, I understand that it’s nice work if you can get it.
Anyway, as a direct result of this somewhat predictable outcome I’ve written a letter, more out of curiosity than anything else, to Vernon Coaker, my local MP, to see if he’s an avaricious cock or not. Here it is.
Dear Vernon Coaker,
Just a quick missive to enquire as to which way you voted on the recent MP’s expenses furore; with a bit of luck you’ll have voted for the overhaul as opposed to compounding the image that all politicians are self-serving and untrustworthy.
Yours sincerely,
James Whyley
It is a little bit snidey, I’ll grant you that, but it’s hard to accord these people the respect they apparently deserve when they’re so… so, well, disingenuous.
The curious thing is, as much as I have no faith whatsoever in politicians, our current government or, sadly, our democratic process**, I am quite excited at the prospect of a reply from my MP. Unfortunately, according to theyworkforyou.com, Mr Coaker tows the party line on pretty much everything, which tempers my enthusiasm somewhat. Still, you don’t know if you don’t try.
By the way, if you’re interested in actively taking part in what passes for democracy in this country, which you should be, you could do worse than avail yourself of the following:

Do feel free to make their lives as difficult as possible; turn and turn about, yes?
*That is to say, “oh what a fucking surprise.â€
** I’ve nothing against the democratic process; it’s a fine idea, just our implementation of it.
